 Matulji
A town in the region of Kastav, 13 km north-west
of Rijeka; elevation 180 m; population 3,495. Situated on the main
road and railway connection between Rijeka and Pivka.
The parish church of Christ the King, built in
1934, has neo-style features, as well as several public institutions.
Matulji is situated in the contact zone between
Kvarner and the mountain hinterland, only 2 km far from Opatija.
Apart from private accommodation and the well-known catering offer,
climbing to the slopes of Mt. Ucka and Mt. Lisina, sightseeing of
the picturesque towns of Kastav and Veprinac, swimming in Opatija
or Prelucki Zaljev (the Preluk Bay), which provide all prerequisites
for water sports (surfing), are also included in the tourist offer.
The carnival season (January/February), the Bell
Ringers Show, at which bell ringers companies summon from the whole
region, which is well-known for its original masks, ringing and
symbolic movements, represents a special attraction.
