Transport

According to the National Classification of Industrial Branches, transfort includes the following services of transfort, storage and communication:

  • carrying out regular and special transport of people and goods, by train, road, water, air and pipelines
  • auxiliary activities on terminals, or parking places, reloading, storing, etc.
  • postal services and telocommunications
  • renting vehicles and equipment with driver or handler.

Due to Croatia's favourable geographic and transport position, the transport infrastucture and activities are very important factors of the country's economic and social development. The present condition of transport in Croatia is not satisfactory, especially the condition of harbours, coastal and inland navigation, and railways. The share of combined transport in the overall transport is very small. This type of transport is the most modern one, it is environment friendly, and therefore should be developed as soon as possible (using government incentive) in order to get Croatia included into European transport network.
The current situation of transport could be partially excused if we take into consideration the objective cirsumstances the country has fin itself during the past decade, its heritage from the past and the lack of development strategy. Surplus of transport capacities can be noted, that is, a disproportion between the transport capacities and transport needs, especially when it comes to road transport.
Road and railway infrastructure are not equally developed in all the parts of Croatia. There is need of considerable investments both into the existing infrastructure and the new one, as well as in the connection of the coastal and inland parts of Croatia. The share of transport in GDP is eight per cent and in the overall number of employees seven per cent.
